All my life I’ve had a passion for helping others be healthier in mind, body, and spirit. This led me to study nutrition & dietetics in college and become a life wellness coach. My true love is teaching about wellness, and helping women feel more inspiration and joy in life by changing how they think and feel about themselves and their bodies.
As things go, I went through my own struggle with my body and food (along with anxiety and overwhelm). I was eventually diagnosed with an eating disorder. Originally, my desire to "control" my body and the binge eating that followed, started as I dealt with the stress of college. But even after the stress was gone, I still binged and overexercised. It became a habit that kept me stuck in a vicious cycle of almost daily overeating and over-exercising. As I graduated from college and stepped into a career as a registered dietitian-nutritionist I felt so incongruent because here I was the food & nutrition expert, yet my body and food were my biggest struggle.
I finally hit a rock bottom and went through a divorce. I ended up going to eating disorder counseling. However, it never felt like the right thing for me. Even after weeks of therapy I was still bingeing most nights. The “real me” didn’t want to do it, but it was this deeply ingrained and compulsive habit that I could not resist or willpower my way out of. I finally made the decision to leave therapy and went on my own winding journey of healing and personal development. I ultimately stopped bingeing and finally found the freedom with food I so desperately sought. My relationship with food became peaceful, balanced, in-control, and easy. And my relationship with by body changed from frustration and "fixing" to appreciation and nurturing.
What I learned from my own struggle is the reason food rules, food restriction, & mainstream dieting methods don’t work for people and only make the struggle worse is because they work against both your body and your mind. They trigger biological & psychological survival mechanisms and send you deeper into the struggle. Dieting and food restriction also don’t address what’s going on inside of you, at the root of the problem, which is your thoughts and feelings that are creating how you act toward yourself, your body, and food, and that are driving all your behaviors. What’s sabotaging you and your eating isn’t a lack of willpower or lack of motivation, it’s actually: #1 food restriction and dieting strategies, and #2 the beliefs, thoughts, and feelings you have about: 1) food, 2) your eating, 3) your body, 4) your emotions, and 5) yourself. These are the 5 Key Pillars that need to be addressed for you to have feelings of peace and freedom with food, as well as lasting ease, comfort, and confidence in your body.
